What is BOTOX?

BOTOX® is a natural, purified protein approved for cosmetic use by the FDA. Injected directly into overactive facial muscles, in very low doses, it relaxes the muscles so they do not contract as strongly. This causes the skin to become smooth and unwrinkled.

Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Juveau, and Daxxify are the five FDA-approved botulinum toxins in the United States. They are all botulinum toxin type A and are produced by different companies. They have proprietary differences but all work generally in the same way.

How does it work?

BOTOX is injected directly into the wrinkle-causing muscle with a tiny microneedle temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the area. This causes the muscle to remain in a resting state giving your face a relaxed, more youthful appearance.

Where is BOTOX most effective?

BOTOX is used to soften frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the outer corners of the eyes. It is also used to raise eyebrows, treat horizontal lines on the bridge of the nose, and soften lines around the mouth, chin, and neck.

How is BOTOX used in the treatment of Hyperhidrosis?

In addition to its cosmetic applications, BOTOX has been proven safe and effective for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). BOTOX helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves to the sweat glands thus inhibiting severe sweat production. The FDA has approved BOTOX for the treatment of severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents.

Hyperhidrosis typically affects the underarms, palms, and soles of the feet and is a source of great psychological and social distress for those who suffer from this condition. Dr. McAnalley is experienced with the treatment of hyperhidrosis and is a member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society. Prior to treatment with BOTOX, Dr. McAnalley will perform a thorough evaluation to rule out secondary causes of excessive sweating.

How is BOTOX used to treat migraine headaches?

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for migraine headaches. It has become an effective and life-changing treatment for people with migraines headaches in whom no other treatment modalities have been effective. Botox is injected into the area of origin of the migraine and can mitigate the frequency and severty of migraines.

How long does it last?

Patients see results from BOTOX in 2-5 days with maximum effects typically visible in 10 days to two weeks. You can expect to maintain your result for 3-4 months. Results last significantly longer when BOTOX is used to treat hyperhidrosis.
